April is Volunteer Month

Sharing our time is a valuable resource that we can all do. The feeling of satisfaction when we support our community is universal. Many of the RTC clients and associates spend many hours each month giving back to their community.

RTC’s Community Engagement program offers clients and associates the opportunity to do Meals on Wheels. Several days a week clients support Lifecare Alliance with getting meals to those who need them. They form relationships with the people they take the meals to and spend time with them, offering food for the body and the soul.

The Community Engagement program also has a group that spends time at the Friendly Senior Center on Friday cleaning their space.

The Pos+Abilities program offers clients a variety of volunteer programs throughout the community. During the school year they go to GRACE (Greater Riverside Area Community Encouragers) every Tuesday to pack food for students that need extra food on the weekends. “I know that we have the best volunteers right here at GRACE,” explained GRACE Director, Darlene Roll. “We can count on you every single week to come and get the work done. We couldn’t do this without you.” They also sort glasses for the Lions Club to reuse through the GRACE program.

Pos+Abilities spends time at Lutheran Community Services two Thursdays a month, helping prepare for the evening meal at Our Daily Bread too.

There are also various events that come up throughout the year that need volunteers for a day or a few hours that both Pos+Abilities and Community Engagement participate in as well. Last year they supported Rock the Lake, the Bellefontaine Citizens Police Academy Association and more.

Help us name our Adult Day Service programs. We currently call them the Blue Room and the Orange Room, but we want a name that better exemplifies what they are. The programs provide valuable social interactions and community involvement. Each program is person-centered, primarily focusing on increasing independence and building relationships through physical activity, art, gardening, visiting museums, coffee shops, and many other activities. The focus is on having a good day while developing skills to reach each person’s maximum potential.

What do you think? Let’s hear your best ideas! The person who gives us the names we use will receive a $15 DQ gift card. Email [email protected] with your favorite names.

The Logan County Braves – Community Basketball game was a huge success. The evening started with the color guard bringing in the flag and the National Anthem by Sara Stierhoff.

The teams, divided into red and black, put on a show for the crowd. Adam Harpest started the night with a basket for the Red Team, bringing the crowd to their feet. The rules called for every other basket to be made by one of the Braves players, allowing every Brave player to shoot multiple times and most of them making at least one. Chad Johnson was the high scorer for the braves, with other baskets coming from Jack Costin, Morgan Huffer, Tim Coppler, Bill Bialecki, Frank Chatfield, Adam Abshire, Taylor Young, Joe Van Voorhis, and Jacob Hawk. While the Red Team started the scoring, the Black Team quickly jumped out to a 12-point lead. keeping the lead by 4 as the first half ended.

At halftime the crowd was entertained by the Logan County Braves Cheerleaders and the Discovery Center cheerleaders.

The second half was back and forth with several lead changes. The teams fought hard, and the crowd was even treated to dunks by celebrities on both the Red and Black teams! The game came down to the last 2.2 seconds when the Red Team was fouled and got one shot in the basket, bringing the score to 58 to 57. The Red team also got the rebound and another basket, winning the game game 60 to 57.

In the end everyone won. The game was so much fun, and all proceeds go toward ensuring every playground in Logan County is accessible to all children.

The Studio loves Fridays and every other Monday. Those are days they get to go to Cracked Pot Studio and create something amazing. The Studio’s roots are in Cracked Pot Studio, Thelma was the one who started this program. Today it has grown to include weaving, knitting, gardening and so much more.

The Orange Room ushered in spring with a week of studying trees. The weather might not have felt like spring, but their discussions brought excitement about what is coming soon!

Pos+Abilities chose to spend part of Earth Day cleaning up trash in the RTC Services neighborhood. It was a chilly but sunny day, and their efforts allowed them the satisfaction of contributing to their community. At the end of the day isn’t that what we all want?
